Sure you've heard of fasting. Perhaps you've heard of intermittent fasting. Did you know that our bodies were designed to fast though? It's not a new trend. A lot of cultures throughout history have used fasting for medicine. Think about when you're sick. The last thing you feel like doing is eating right? That's because it's your bodies natural way to fight the virus. Fasting along with your diet is also the best way to accomplish weight loss. What I've learned through various books I've read recently on food and nutrition is that, counting calories is useless. Eating real food and controlling when you eat is the key. Your weight gain or loss is not a matter of the calories you take in, it's what kind of calories you take in combined with when you take them in. Fasting is the way to reset your bodies natural energy expenditure mechanism. This is where your body starts to burn fat for fuel, rather than glucose. Yeah it's a lot of scientific nerdy stuff to get into, but the bottom line is it works. How long you fast can vary depending on why you're doing it. The reason the first meal of the day is call breakfast, is because it breaks the fast from the day before. So, you actually already fast everyday. Give a 24 hour fast a try. Have your coffee, water throughout the day, but no food. It's actually pretty easy. Then, take it from there. Try a 24 hour fast once a week, try intermittent fasting (allow yourself only to eat within an 8 hour window everyday, say 10am - 6pm). Experiment to find what works best for you and your goals.
